Spice Tin

Spice Tin is a product that evolved from us questioning various ways of reading the ‘contained’ & the ‘container’. The conceptualization of a container that displays its content without necessarily opening it up. The idea of visualizing the ‘contained’ through the sense of smell from the container help to realize a transparent opaqueness in the object.

Plastic and other synthetic containers fail to capture the essence of the traditional storage methods. Traditionally the make and material of the container would be defined by that which it contains, for example , the earthen pots for water, or wooden boxes for spices. The design of the Spice tins attempts to bring back these snippets of sensorial memory to the urban dining tables. The aromatic sensorial experience of the spices will attach the user to the ‘contained’ through the ’container’.

The ensemble reflects the dioramic of the Western Ghats of India renowned worldwide for its treasured spices. The colored wooden spice tins shaped like wedges interlocked into a tray of crevasses, reflects “a landscape of aroma.” Each set of four spice tins uses a permutation of natural colors of violet wood, jackfruit wood, teak, acacia and mahogany wood. The tins are splayed to different directions depicting the colorful and jagged mountain ranges of the land. The valley is depicted by the base with its crevasses that hold the tins in place.

As objects of everyday use, we tend to overlook the values it could hold and tend to perceive them as trivial. If thoughtfully designed, small, simple, day to day objects could become tales of culture, geography and history. Through material-both body and the contained- gives a new dimension of aesthetics to the user ( both physical as well as sensorial). Through the integration of playful colors and the slanted cuts in the base gives a playful experience for all the users.

Spice tins can be ordered as individual boxes or as a landscape of spice tins. Do leave us an enquiry if you would like to know more.
